Winterson has some of the best prose I've ever experienced - I want to take a bath in it.

Tbh this felt like a slog a lot of the time, I just couldn't get into its rhythm. The narrative voices didn't feel distinct enough to me, and while there were moments of truth-beauty in the writing a lot of it felt like waffle? I feel like I must have been missing something. This book and I just didn't get on very well.

Art & Lies is my favorite novel of all time. I have read it at least 5 times now, and it is richer and more rewarding with each return. Winterson is a master wordsmith, who brings a poet's sensuality to her prose. Her use of language in Art & Lies is incantatory, densely layered, difficult and gorgeous. It is best read aloud. If I could only read one book over again for the rest of my life, this would be my choice.

The writing in this one is very flowy, flowery, almost Modernist-like — which is what I’ve come to expect from Winterson, but the premise of the book and the fragmented, bordering-on-nonsensical narration are a great deal more Postmodern. I suppose I liked it a little less than I expected because the narration is much more reflective and less plot-driven than her previous ones. It’s definitely not a book for everyone, and some of the topics it deals with are definitely not fun, but some parts really did resonate strongly with me.

This was the first book I read by Winterson and it blew my 17-year-old mind.

I fear the coloured world on my neutral body

no, i don't really know what happened in this novel.
yes, i loved it.
it was ridiculously beautiful writing, it made some scathing commentary, it was so invested in the characters and had not a single piece of coherent plot
