pretty damning, i have to say.
i've been struggling with the idea of not having a singular original thought, and i've been reminiscing about what i used to get out of internet spaces that i just don't have anymore - there was a fulfillment then that i don't have now. this book kind of affirms some of those feelings with evidence from a number of fields that points at why: it's just all algorithmic. it's designed to be that way (it wasn't before).

that said, i'm not sure what new this book is contributing to the conversation about algos and culture. i mean, i as a layperson who was once extremely online, already thought this book up. it affirmed my beliefs, but i wish it expanded my horizon a bit (other than pointing to a bunch of research, which is great but not what i want from a book about a topic that I have no expertise in!!!). isn't that what we're looking for from a non-fiction book?

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Like others have mentioned, I feel that this book would work better as an essay (or perhaps a more rigorous analysis). Unfortunately it overlaps with a lot that I'm already aware of, and felt somewhat repetitive because of this. Also felt somewhat internally repetitive.
