A fascinating examination of how algorithms impact our lives even when we're not online. It really makes you think about how you interact with social media.

Great read that takes a look behind the curtain at the ‘Algorithm’ and how it works.
Some parts of the book were a bit wordy. But overall some great examples and eye opening facts.

Wish I could give a 3.5; the stuff about architecture and design here is so, so interesting! I'm less moved by some of the arguments about literature/art and the inherent superiority of human tastemakers (it's so complicated!) Definitely worth a read!

If I believed in number rating I would consider five stars

A relevant read. Not the most gripping and a bit long winded at times, but an important dialog about the lasting impacts of social media and algorithms on our culture.

“Consumption without taste is just undiluted accelerated capitalism. There are two forces forming our taste [independent pursuit of what we individually enjoy] & [our awareness of what it appears most other people like, the dominant mainstream]"

“Corrupt personalization is the process by which your attention is drawn to interests that are not your own,” Sandvig wrote. The recommendation system “serves a commercial interest that is often at odds with our interests.”

“In passively consuming what I was interested in, had I given up my agency to figure out what was truly meaningful to me?”
