Found it difficult to get into this as I found it somewhat meandering into the topic of how social media algorithms affect the 'culture'. There was no depth on the technology side which seems quite overlooked on this topic. Most of us have a feel for how our feeds try to guide / manipulate us (for many they're actually beneficial) - but it never went into enough depth on why they might not be beneficial a la Zuboff's "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism".

While it was certainly a solid work, I found that its strengths are in the first 60%. Much of the last third of the book could have been cut out.

The AirBnB part was great but never referenced again. It would have been nice to see an examination of the apparel industry, which rides the waves of recommender algorithms and the rapid trend cycle on the ship of cheap labour and poor quality material. There are dumping grounds full of rotting synthetic fabric clothes that still have tags on them. Of the three basic human needs, food and shelter have been covered - why not put some effort into studying the effect of algorithms on clothing?
