found this super relatable as a millennial who has spent the last 15+ years in advertising and digital media. no major “ah ha” moments but a good reminder to protect your peace and be mindful of what and how much of the internet you are consuming since much of it exists to keeps you mindlessly engaged for the benefit of selling you things and thoughts, not all of which are good for you.

3.25 stars.

Relevatory work or cultural criticism

I've already been trying to limit how much I rank the media I consume, on here and on Letterboxd, because it feels weird to try to quantify what are sometimes unquantifiable experiences. But ranking this book and thereby subjecting it to the curse of downvoting and algorithmic metrics feels especially wrong.

I think it's fairly evident that Chayka isn't a cultural anthropologist, but the underlying intuitions about tech's relation to culture are very valid and contemporarily important. We need to continue this work and expand its analysis to economic and political forces more
