As someone who loved Anna K, I’m not sure a sequel was needed here. This book is really about grief and I found some parts so moving but others didn’t make me feel much at all. While I really love some of the characters, this story also didn’t feel complete

If you read Lee's first book Anna K because you loved Anna Karenina and wanted a modern retelling, then this book is not for you. If you read Anna K simply because it was about obscenely rich adolescents and their crazy lives, then this book is for you.

I don't fault Lee for wanting to continue to capitalize on this world she created. And there are going to be people who loved this book. But the first book really did not need a sequel. It was great. So, this book was just kinda a let down.

But it sure was just as drama-filled as the first. And there was some fun stuff and plot lines I enjoyed enough, but I just couldn't love this book like I did the first.

The hallmark of a good ensemble-cast story is a sense of longing: when each chapter ends, you feel sad because you don't want to leave the headspace of the protagonist at any given point in time.

The opposite of that is... whatever Anna K: Away was. At first, I found myself frustrated because I solely cared about Anna K's story gallivanting around Seoul, and wasn't interested in anyone else's stories at all. Then it got worse, because I even stopped caring about Anna K's story (once she got into the whole "mystery girl" business and went off to Europe and beyond).

All these characters were so shallow and vapid. None of them were likeable. It'd be fine if this romp into the lives of the rich and famous was at least funny or witty, but we didn't get those qualities either. Ugh. I definitely could've gone without reading this one.
