Aleluya!

Ainda estou me recuperando desse final mas EU QUERO FALAR.

I received Barefoot Queen for free in exchange for an honest review from bloggingforbooks.com. I was really excited for this book. I admit that my excitement pretty much stemmed from the cover of this book. The cover is pretty much THE main reason for wanting this book. It is absolutely gorgeous! Of course the synopsis didn't seem so bad. I was shocked however to discover how long the book really was. I hadn't been expecting it, and it definitely plays a part in why I gave this book 3 stars (a rarity for me)

Though I was wanting to avoid a really long book, I was still excited to read it. However the length coupled with a lot of scenes that I felt were probably not necessary made this book somewhat hard to get through. It really didn't help that I had a huge pile of books I needed to read so I kept putting this book down and then picking it back up after a while. I think this made it really hard to get into the book. The character were all very much over the top except for Caridad the ex-slave who was absolutely robotic almost. Plus, for a man the author had no respect for his fellow dudes! Pretty much any encounter with the two female characters was strife with men unable to control their 'animal urges'. Men, in the presence of Caridad and Milagros, became drooling fools unable to function as people.

Overall I gave this book 3 stars because it was so over the top, fairly too long and filled with throwaway scenes, and way over the top. It wasn't as enjoyable as I would have liked. However, I will say that this book has the very potential to be great. The plot is strong and believable, it just wasn't executed in a way that struck me.

I love Spanish literature, but this one was a book that sort of made me go, eh. I loved Cathedral of the Sea and was hoping that this was going to follow in the same vein, but this one sadly falls short of the grandoise scope and characterization that the other book was grand for. I loved all of the characters in Cathedral of the Sea, but Milagros and Caridad were meh. Short of being fate's punching bags and the sexiest bitches to walk the land if the descriptions are to be believed, didn't find much substance to them.

The action took ages to get started and I found myself actually skimming and counting pages, which is always a bad sign. Maybe next novel will have him be back in form. But yeah, not his best.
