On my way to start reading the classics, I stumbled upon this gem and of course, I had to read it before I read the original story. I think almost everyone is accustomed to the story and know some parts or another, but this graphic novel seems to follow the original novel very closely (but mind you, I didn't read the novel yet).

At first, I wasn't impressed by the lack of action as most of the panels are just descriptions of people's thoughts and stories, but I quickly realize how deep this novel is. It's not about the creation of the monster but about the human condition and the fate of monsters inside us. So to create a graphic novel out of a meditation on human nature, the soul, and the grotesque is a major accomplishment.

Loved the story, but the writing was sometimes stiff and the art style wasn’t my favorite.

The graphics in this are stunning and do well to capture the changes in characters, as well as the symbols. I used this with my grade 10 class, and while they sometimes had trouble with the vocabulary (we used the original text), they understood and enjoyed the story as a whole.
