This is where we switch teams and learn to hate certain characters we once loved! Loved the ending!

"He thinks he’ll be remembered as the villain in the story.”
She snorted.
“But I forgot to tell him,” I said quietly, opening the door, “that the villain is usually the person who locks up the maiden and throws away the key.”
“Oh?”
I shrugged. “He was the one who let me out.”"

I think I can finally see why SO MANY people adore this series, and it's characters.

Honestly, after reading the first book, I didn't fully get the hype. So much of it bored me to tears. Tamlin was an uninteresting, inoffensive love interest, and the Calanmai scene creeped me out. Usually I'd give up on continuing a series that made me feel that way, but the last quarter really hooked me... and I found Rhysand to be captivating. Knowing that fans preferred this one to the first, and that Feyre dumps Tamlin for Rhys, it was enough to give me hope, and I'm so glad it did.

Firstly, I must say how much I loved the character development for Feyre. She was so much more likable, her intelligence shined, and it was a beautiful arc to see her break away from an abusive relationship and find a happier way forward. Stories like this are so important for so many people to see, especially women. And on top of all that, I just enjoyed seeing Feyre's new powers, and her slowly mastering them, I love stuff like that, even if it does make her a bit over powered. Men get sooo many stories like that, I don't really see the issue when it's reversed (I mean... just look at Superman lmao)

Rhys was also a major highlight. He was effortlessly charming and funny (the initial things that deterred me from Tamlin, man is as bland as Wonder bread lmao), but also had a lot of pain and depth. The best thing though, is his desire to treat Feyre like a person, and equal, rather than a pet. It's one thing to be protective, and have worry, but it's another to be overbearing and controlling. There were so many scenes that made me love him, but the best in my opinion, were when he was explaining when he initially knew about their bond, and when he said that he made her his High Lady, something that is never done. It literally brought me to tears.

I also really liked the new characters introduced, Mor, Azriel, Cassian and Amren (though I initially didn't feel positively towards her haha). They have so much love, respect, and devotion to each other, but they'll still call each other out on their bad behaviors, it's such a nice relationship they all have.

And that ending... I was gutted! It was SO good and tense, I'm all about it, and I cannot wait to see what'll unfold in the final book of the original trilogy.

However, obviously I didn't have a perfect experience, because my rating was below a 5. Mostly that's due to a couple of moments where I felt like things were lagging a bit, but there were a few specific things that bothered me.

1. The Court of Nightmares scene. I don't like exhibitionism, never have, never will. It gives me the ick, and honestly it just frustrated me. I think we could've had the same scene, just don't make it become so erotic.

2. The odd lack of Tamlin. Listen, I hate the guy. I didn't initially (when I read book one), but the things he does are unforgivable. But I really thought we'd get more drama and spice (not the sexy kind) out of the messy dynamics happening, with Feyre being more overtly conflicted versus it being a somewhat internal battle. Basically I just wanted the melodrama of it all, because I find it so exciting (the later scene with Lucien was so fun, and I wanted more)

3. I hate the whole "mate" thing. I love the idea of soulmates, the red string of fate type of thing, but the way it's used and described here feels to animalistic and feral. It's just unappealing to me personally, it's one of many reasons why I don't enjoy actual omegaverse content

4. Feyre and Rhysand's physical relationship developed a bit too quickly for me, there just wasn't as much edge-of-your-seat tension in the romance as I'd have liked (there's some, just not enough). The sex chapter got boring after the first time because of this. I just want every touch, hand caress, and kiss to be a massive deal, it's more exciting for me that way.

I know these were all preference things, but that's basically what reviews are; someone stating their preferences in storytelling, and character development, and whether or not the book lived up to that. So please, no hate. I did overall like the book, I mean just look at my rating haha

Anyways, can't wait to continue, but I probably won't read the Nesta centered one. I don't like her, at all, and don't care much about her romance with Cassian.
