this book was interesting but didn’t captivate me the way i expected. i think going into things with high expectations is always hard and they are rarely met. i found the writing style to be similar to colleen hoover’s, which was not something i enjoyed. vanessa’s mindset towards her situation was interesting to read
and it was clear how strane’s words had manipulated and affected her. in terms of character development, i found that vanessa didn’t have very much. right towards the end when she finally told her therapist what had happened to her, and when her and taylor had their final run in with each other she exhibited some signs of acknowledging what had happened. i understand it was important to the story that strane had manipulated her so much that she never wanted to turn him in and denied telling her story to the journalist, but even in her therapy she was still denying that she had been abused. also, when her mother found the polaroid of her and strane together and then did nothing i was shocked and confused. even if she didn’t immediately want to tell her dad, and later on she told vanessa she didn’t want to put her through a trial and court etc, i was still expecting her to at least talk to vanessa privately and for them to work through it.

overall the book was good but not great

The subject matter of this book made it an extremely difficult read, but it's very fast paced so it was a quick read for me. This is definitely a book I'll be thinking about for a very long time.

Please please please go into this book prepared. I tried to include as many trigger warnings as I could remember but it's possible I missed some.
