I feel like I still don't know confidently how I feel about this book so this review is subject to change but WOW, that was quite a read. I felt uncomfortable with myself for reading about the things that took place in this book but that's the point. The reader is supposed to feel uncomfortable and disturbed and gross after this narrative.

The psychological dynamics are explored so thoroughly and this book was written over the course of ten years, so I think Russell really put a lot of thought and care in telling this difficult story. This book writes of the relationship in the time of the #MeToo movement (and directly addresses it in the story) yet it distances itself in order to establish individual and unique ideas separate from those of that line of thinking (not saying that writing a story in line with that is bad at all).

Vanessa's POV is corruptive and raw and real. She has a warped sense of the narrative and truly believes in her once in a life time love story with her high school English teacher who is 30 years her senior. Her adult POV is even more thoughtful and her conversations with her therapist are stand out scenes for me showcasing the development as we learn of her long term relationship. This book veered off in a completely different direction than I was expecting and I think it has a real purpose in this day and age.

<i>Wow.</i> I devoured this book, every raw, real, nauseating page of it.

This isn't a book I would recommend lightly, nor do I think it is a book for everyone. But it's a fantastic, poignant, wrenching study of a young woman's desperate attempts to cope and live with the trauma she's endured for so much of her life, a trauma so all-consuming that she struggles to define herself without it. Nothing about this book is pleasant, but if you're one to be moved by raw accounts and beautifully repulsive writing, this will touch you deeply.

For anyone who can stomach the content warnings, this book is worth your time.

This book was incredibly difficult for me to read, at times it felt like I was reading about myself and that was scary to say the least. It really makes you feel like there’s no adult that is actually trying to help which sadly is very true.
