i usually dont say a lot about the production of the audiobook bc i like to just focus on the words, but emily woo zeller was an amazing narrator. zeller expressed the characters with a dynamic range of pitches and timbre that really allowed me to get lost in the story.

this book really made me feel intensely for ever and her struggles, and i didn't run into the issue of being frustrated with a protag because they were ignoring simple solutions to their problems. i found ever to be creative and impulsive, and that was really compelling to me. sophie was also such a fun character to get to know, with her many facets -- though i do wish her actions had been dissected a little more, or that she had really owned up to them.

i honestly loved the detail put into each of the characters -- the core group of students that ever was friends with were so distinct, in and of themselves. this created an incredibly fleshed out and varied setting, which i thoroughly enjoyed.

This is a coming of age story. Ever has been the good child her whole life, deferring her own wants for her parents. And then they send her off to Taipei after forcing her to give up her dreams of dancing. Except she's able to learn and grow in her own way. It was a really good story that explored so many things. Being a good child and then trying to become yourself, race, gender, class, love and romance. Just a great book and I'm excited for the second book!

I had fun reading this. It wasn't the best YA I've ever read, but it's a lot better than a lot of what's out there. Character development was huge in this story, and I really liked where all of our characters ended up.

This is more a new adult novel than a young adult novel, and because of that distinction there is multiple sex scenes (one intercourse and one oral) so if that offends you or you don't want your teenager reading that, avoid this one. That being said, the sex scenes were handled extremely well. There was safe sex representation, as well as consent representation. I liked that some characters were happy to have casual sex, others wanted to be in a committed relationship, while others were right in between those two. One character has a sexual encounter that's more casual than she wanted, but instead of wallowing in shame she decides "the next time I have sex will be when I'm in love." I loved that, because it is very real.

Overall a good new adult novel, and I'm excited to see where the series goes.
