the characters drove me INSANE, think this book might be too young for me. the whining and the complaining were just present everywhere and so blatant. i got about halfway and still did not care about the story. i think it’s an important one especially with how it relates to asian stereotypes but the characters made the story unbearable. just kept getting lost

also the snake scene almost made me vomit, was NOT a fan of that at ALL. felt super unnecessary

“Maybe part of fighting the unhappiness in this world is to seize happiness when we can.”

This was adorable and fun and just full of teenagers being messy and I loved it.  I loved watching Ever grow to love herself and her culture. It was amazing to finally see her fight for the things she wants while still appreciating the fight her parents have put in for her to have this life. I loved the found family aspect and all the relationships. Of course some characters were annoying and honestly Ever is way more forgiving than I would’ve been, but this book did a great job summing up what it’s like to be young and not know what you’re doing. Don’t take it too seriously and just enjoy the ride.

I found it really boring, and really didn’t like the main character, I thought she was way too much of a coward to face her problems with her parents head on and instead does stupid things. I hated the way medicine was portrayed, because I think people can have passion for it (and other traditional careers) so the whole passion vs. parents’ expectations trope really bothered me.
finally, I draw the line at animal cruelty and the snakes thing at the club was way too graphic and awful.

i usually dont say a lot about the production of the audiobook bc i like to just focus on the words, but emily woo zeller was an amazing narrator. zeller expressed the characters with a dynamic range of pitches and timbre that really allowed me to get lost in the story.

this book really made me feel intensely for ever and her struggles, and i didn't run into the issue of being frustrated with a protag because they were ignoring simple solutions to their problems. i found ever to be creative and impulsive, and that was really compelling to me. sophie was also such a fun character to get to know, with her many facets -- though i do wish her actions had been dissected a little more, or that she had really owned up to them.

i honestly loved the detail put into each of the characters -- the core group of students that ever was friends with were so distinct, in and of themselves. this created an incredibly fleshed out and varied setting, which i thoroughly enjoyed.
