The good: the author has a style that seems distinctly Spanish.

The bad: I think the book was supposed to be more profound than I found it, that the narrator was supposed to be realizing something deep about life and death when she just seemed to me to be a silly woman.

Would give it 4.5 but throughout the book there are some really well written think pieces that fit really well inbetween the casual daily life story-telling which I really enjoy in a short novel. Would like to read again on a summery holiday

Blanca finds comfort in her friends and family after the passing of her mother, her best friend in the whole world. She returns to Cadaques after being settled in Barcelona for so long, on a journey to find herself again. This includes continuing her affair with her married lover, and traveling with her closest friends and two sons. The novel is honest, funny and impossible to put down!

When someone close to you dies, it becomes quite natural to take stock of your life and observe those around you more closely, which is what the narrator of Milena Busquets' This Too Shall Pass does.

To read this, and other book reviews, visit my website: http://makinggoodstories.wordpress.com/.

Blanca, a 40 year old double-divorcee with two boys, is stricken with grief when her mother suddenly passes away. In her attempt to come to terms with her life without her mother, Blanca spends the summer with her family and close friends while mentally commenting to her mother all the things that they're doing.

A brief look into the mind of a woman whose actions stem from her desires to enjoy life and be loved. A quick, rather light read of the often heavy topic of death and grief, the book demonstrated how people can cope with tragedies in their lives and the benefit of having a support system, as you can learn new coping and life skills from them. I was, at times, put off by the childish behavior of Blanca, but that could stem from cultural differences, as well as an effort to emphasize the transformation Blanca makes into a more fully-fledged adult.
