The Flames of Albiyon by Jean Menzies

the premise was good, but the plot was severely lacking - which i wouldn’t have minded so much had it been a character-driven book, but even the characters felt underdeveloped. there was little nuance to them, and i failed to see the chemistry between the main character and her love interest. their romance felt very rushed, as did the (incredibly predictable) conflict/ending

also, there were so, so many typos, spelling mistakes, and grammatical errors. they were difficult to overlook because they were so rampant, and they definitely took away from my enjoyment of the book

Bought this book just in support of Jean - who has recommended so many great reads to me over on YouTube.

It was such a pleasure to read, more so than I expected. Fantastic world building - hope to read more from the world of Albiyon.

The premices of this book are great : fantasy, academia, dragon, queer... do I need to say more? I would have love for it to be longer and to take more time to describe everything in more details, wheteher the settings or the relationships between the characters (humans or dragons), I felt it might have gone to quickly over things sometimes. I think one of the most interresting aspect of this world was the politcs : it was really refreshing to have a fantasy world that had move on from monarchy in favor of a democratic system.
It was a fun and nice read that felt like the first instalment of a story with a lot of potential. I'll be around for book 2 !
(I just have to say how delighted I am to have in my sheleves the first fantasy book of the Youtuber who recommended half of the book I've read this last couple of years! )

This book is everything that 2021 needed hope punk fantasy with dragons and sapphic romance!

I absolute loved this book it's so beautifully written and I absolutely loved the Scottish dialect in the book that is obviously flawless as its written by a Scottish author.
The main romance in this book is so well done its based on intimacy and progresses slowly and full of compassion with emphasis on consent which is amazing to see!
The world is so well put together and the entries from the text books from the library just show how much the author has planned out everything, it never feels like an info dump but more like you are the scholar finding things in the library.

The dragons are brilliant characters and Tearlach reminds me of Sephira from Eragon! Fia can be a typical teenager which i absolutely loved because she is young and its brilliant the author gave her time to be young and stubborn instead of forcing wisdom on her.

As said before this is a hopeful book the scenes of gardening are so peaceful and the world is idyllic but the action scenes made my pulse race and I had to find out what was happening so I raced through the last 100 pages!

I absolutely adored this book and it is 100% going to be on my top books of 2021 and I cant wait to read more by this author and continue this series!

Well, I flew through this book, barely stopping since the preorder arrived the other day. I really enjoyed this story. This is a fantasy debut novel about dragons, politics, and found family with nice helpings of romance (sometimes pretty steamy) and mystery/intrigue. If you like character driven fantasy that isn’t grim dark and is set in cozy academic locations, then this story is a real treat. The sapphic romance is very sweet and pretty spicy, and the dragons are a very interesting component of the story. I enjoyed the inclusion of dragon lore from the world, and found the feeling of this book to be super positive and hopeful, while also realistic about actual issues in the society of Albiyon. This book does read like a (very strong) debut, and there were some writing mechanics that I struggled with a bit in the story. In particular there was some telling instead of showing that sometimes took me out of the moment, and the big bad was a bit obviously bad. But to be honest, bad people in real life are also often obviously bad, but are protected by their money and power, which I think was one of the points of this story. Overall, I am super happy that I preordered this book, and now I cannot wait for book two in this series.
