Much like the other short stories offered on Nalini Singh’s website, Movie Night is a nice little extra for fans of the Psy-Changeling series, giving an extremely quick read you can dive into after Hostage to Pleasure. I said on my review of the other short stories in this series that I’m not the biggest fan of these kinds of shorts – in fact, the only case I can think of where I’ve happily devoured all the shorts is with Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series – but I was curious to see how Nalini Singh’s shorts would play out. After all, there’s so many of them, with so many people seeming to enjoy the extras, and I thought it was at least worth the try.

In truth, after my first two, I debated whether I wanted to read any more. I was feeling generous and gave two-star ratings to both The Cannibal Princess and A Conversation. When it came to my third, A Gift for Kit, I found I could not bring myself to round up my one-point-five-star rating and gave a single star. As Movie Night contained the characters from my favourite book in the series, I decided I would give it a try.

Movie Night came closer to being a two-star rating than A Gift for Kit did, as it managed to bring a smile to my face, but I found I couldn’t bring myself to round it up. It was nice to see a bit more of the characters I really enjoyed, to get to see beyond where their story ended, but I had been hoping for a wee bit more. It was nice, but it did not quite have the same magic as the scenes in their book.

If you’re a big fan of the series, and if you enjoy extremely quick reads that offer an insight into the lives of characters, then I’m certain you’ll have fun with this. Otherwise, do not feel as though you need to read these shorts to understand the series.

I liked the snapshot of Judd and Brenna but I didn’t like the “boy movies” comment and it really killed it for me 😕 this short is (c) 2012 but I don’t feel like that excuses the binarism and gendered notions of that comment…
