This comic might easily get lost in the sea of similar-looking books shedding light on women's stories that have been ignored/forgotten/unknown until recently, but unlike some of those (which seem to have been rushed to print simply to ride the pro-lady zeitgeist), Bagieu's book showcases a diverse lineup of history's heroines written engagingly and sans sugarcoat. I loved her book about Mama Cass before the Mamas and the Papas (California Dreamin')...now I wish she would write full-length memoirs for each of the women in Brazen.

this is one of those "pick up and read a bit at a time" books but i flipped through a few profiles (hedy lamarr, tove jansson, josephine baker) when i brought it home from the bookstore and they were all fascinating, nuanced, and honestly quite affecting. fairly diverse spread. the book itself is obviously gorgeous, and bagieu has done a great job condensing some very storied lives into a snackable but satiating format. i tend to take a cynical view of describing things as "empowering", but can definitely see this inspiring a bit of self-confidence in young girls or honestly women of any age....
the one thing i would caution is maybe being selective when reading with more sensitive children, there are some pretty heartbreaking details (which absolutely warrant inclusion) in the few i've read so far. should be fine to read independently for kids that are already fairly emotionally resilient, or together if you're willing to tackle those kinds of issues as they come up.
not sure what it retails for new, i found it at my local used bookstore for like $12 and think it's a great value at that price.

It's a collection of stories about "Brazen" women throughout history and around the globe. I was only familiar with a handful of these women before I read this book because it features historical figures left out of the history books and from around the world. This is not a US-centered list of women which was so refreshing. And there were SO MANY interesting characters, I want to own the book so I can some day dig into the lives of a lot of these women in more detail.
While I love the idea of a non-fiction graphic novel to encourage kids to read about history, this one is in the Young Adult section for a reason. There are darker parts to a lot of these women's histories. (There's also a lot of fabulous sex-positivity!) So if you have a middle-grade reader you might want to pre-read it first to see if it might be too much for them.
But I would encourage everyone women over the age of 15 to grab this book and be INSPIRED! So made great and digestable stories women from around the world and across time. It should be required reading for any budding feminist!

I learned a lot about different women, some who I knew a bit about some who I never heard of. Also very inclusive!

3.75 stars rounded up. This book was interesting. I learned about many women who I'd never heard about and their accomplishments. It didn't shy away from facts about these women's lives. The artwork was not my style personally but I did still appreciate it. The wording choices used reminded me that I wasn't necessarily the target audience for this book.
