3.97 AVERAGE

Grade: A-

I am basing my rating for these childhood books on how much I enjoyed them when I read them as a child.

when i was a kid, nothing sounded awesomer than being a kid recognized as the champion of the world who teamed up with his cool dad to take down capitalistic symbols via vaguely immoral but extremely badass heist-type plans.

and to be honest, it still sounds awesome.

part of a series i'm doing in which i review books i read a long time ago

It's Roald Dahl, so my kids loved it, but I personally could have done without it.

My favorite thing about this story is the boy's love for his father and his father's love for him. What a strong bond they share and an understanding that life needs adventure. Simplicity and warmth. It reminded me of my childhood (not that I ever poached pheasants, mind you) which I fear not many children get in this day and age. I don't recall having read this story when I was younger though it's likely I did since I devoured any book I could get my hands on especially those by Roald Dahl.

Not recommended for vegetarians. I loved this novel as an 8 year old and I loved sharing it with my 7 year old just as much.

I loved this book as a child and spent hours alone in my room trying to smile with my eyes way before Tyra Banks told us about smizing. During lockdown I needed something comforting and this was the perfect choice. It hadn’t always aged well but it gave me the same enjoyment and delight that I remembered.

I always remembered loving this book when I was younger, but found I had forgotten most of it when I was re-reading it this time. I think this was lucky because it was like getting to experience it for the first time all over again! What a great lighthearted and fun read to start the year off.

I didn't care much for it, but the kid liked it a lot.
