Every kid should read this book. But it's very strange, when you look at it from an adult perspective. It's a kids' book about pheasant poaching.
Do you know what Danny knows to be true? That his dad is the best dad in the world. He can make anything seem exciting and magical. They are a real team, Danny and his dad, living on their own in a caravan just outside Danny's dad's service station.
Do you want to know something about Danny's dad? He has a secret passion and that secret is going to bring about some particularly crazy adventures for them both. There may be a villianous, crabby man down the road who gets his comeuppance and there will be no lack of congratulations for Danny when he comes up with the best idea his dad has ever heard.
I am going to spoil something for you, since this is something I wished I'd known when I started reading this to my nine year old son. The dad's secret passion? It's POACHING. Stealing other people's animals. Um, yeah. I just don't know how I feel about that. My son loved it, it is really a beautifully told story, I just felt so bad getting excited about Danny and his dad stealing. I love Dahl's writing and the relationship between Danny and his dad is absolutely fantastic. Even Danny's magnificent idea made my son laugh outloud. I just was disappointed with the plot - perhaps if I was British I wouldn't have minded so much :)

Eric was introduced to this book by his teacher. He has listened to it or read it 4 times now. We listened to it on a road trip again and he still laughs every time. I enjoyed it. It made me want to take my kids on an epic adventure.
My favorite childhood novel. Nowadays it's great to listen to the audiobook when it's hard to fall asleep
Can't remember much about this one, only that my mother didn't think much of it compared to the other ones we had read.
Danny the Champion of the World is a wonderful snapshot of a childhood with all its quirks. The filling station, gypsy wagons and pheasants are all distinct elements of a story that focuses the relationship between a boy and his father. Unlike Dahl's other works, there is not fantasy in this plot, only secrets and injustices.
The book focuses on relationships, trust, and the bond that forms when you're thick as thieves. Although the moral of the story is a bit shaky (was the poaching really justified?), it makes for a wonderful read.

I haven't read Roald Dahl since I was a kid and I don't think I have read this one. It is the story of Danny who lives in a gypsy caravan behind a filling station with his dad. He and his dad work on cars and have a very loving relationship. But Dad has a secret and one day Danny finds out what it is. Turns out dad likes to do a bit of pheasant poaching from the local gentry Mr. Hazell, who is rather nasty. Danny comes up with the most ingenious idea on how to poach 200 pheasants in one night to spoil Mr. Hazell's shooting day.
This was a delightful tale about a father and son. I loved the relationship between Danny and his dad and I really loved the idea of living in a gypsy caravan. I'm not so sure about Dad's decision to introduce Danny to poaching. That may not have been the best parenting choice, but it seems like a hobby many of the local citizens like to participate in.

I have loved every one of Roald Dahl's children's books I've read so far and this one is no exception.
The story of Danny and his widower father is one of love and taking time to truly be present in a child's life as a parent. Danny and his father lived in an old style caravan travel trailer that no longer traveled and was parked behind the service station and mechanic's garage that Danny's father owned and operated. Danny was exceptionally intelligent and this made it even easier for his father to teach him many things about science, technology, and math through play and while they worked together. They enjoyed their time together and had a very close bond.
The story also includes a villain, of course. This is how we figure out how well liked Danny's father is in town and how much no one likes the villain. We also find out that Danny has been learning skills on his own with all that his father has taught him and the very little schooling he has actual schooling he has attended. The biggest surprise (not really a spoiler) is how crooked the town is...but in Danny's father's favor! (end the not really a spoiler)
Overall, I really enjoyed this children's book. My kid's did too, but they love anything with silly words and my made up accents. They just love Dahl's books more.
One additional note, at the beginning of this story, Danny's father tells him a bedtime story about the Big Friendly Giant. This is most definitely the BFG in the later book. I love the intertwining of stories!
