Maybe it's my impending fatherhood talking, but this is one of the most wonderful books I've read. Dahl's tale of a father and son deepening their bond over poaching a rich man's pheasants is the stuff to which most fathers should aspire. A young adult novel that embraces the joy that can still be found with little-to-no money that is charming and touching without ever getting treacly is a marvel. Dahl really respects his readers and never panders. The enthusiasm of his narrator (the boy) is so earnest and infectious, it's hard not to get wholly wrapped up in their adventures and dream of the hijinks possible with your children.
This is probably a better book for young parents to read than anything by Dr. Benjamin Spock. The closing advice from Dahl to children when they grow up and have their own children says it all: “A stodgy parent is no fun at all. What a child wants and deserves is a parent who is SPARKY”

One of my favorite Dahl`s, is always funny and entertaining
I am currently trying to read all of Roald Dahl's books this year.
I want to start off letting you know where I stand. This book did not impress me. After reading sooo many of Roald Dahl's books this year, this book was a let down. There wasn't a lot to the plot and it became very boring at moments. If this book wasn't so short it probably would have been a DNF for me. This book also wasn't creative. The main character was very similar to the main character in George's Marvelous Medicine, they mentioned creatures that other books have in them, birds (like in The Minpins) and again this book talked about chocolate and candy. I might have to take a break from his books soon, because he keeps an extremely similar pattern and creativity with all his books.
About the book:
Danny's mother passes away, so it is only him and his father. Danny wakes up in the middle of the night to find his father is not a sleep. He finds out that his father has been poaching pheasants. This is a dangerous and very illegal activity but Danny decides he wants to do it with his father. Danny comes up with a new method for poaching. A sleeping medicine that has all the pheasants fall asleep. However, sleeping medicine can only last so long and eventually it wore off….

Another great night time book to read. My 7 year old really enjoyed it. We have already been through the entire Roald Dahl box set and Danny the Champion of the World was the last fiction book.
For me, it was not my favorite. It was a good lesson to children that their parents are more than you know them to be, ie., they had a life before you were born. Although, this book kind of encourages kids to steal. I mean, poaching is basically just stealing, even if it is from a rich guy that nobody likes.
