I picked up this book from my neighborhood Little Library and was looking forward to a fast-paced, enjoyable thriller. I was disappointed. There are multiple unconvincing scenarios and minimal character development. The structure and pacing of the book was good, and the back story of the serial killer was mildly interesting. If you enjoy FBI procedural books, this may be for you. Trigger warnings for child abuse, graphic torture scenes, and sexual assault. This book is published by Amazon’s mystery and thriller imprint Thomas & Mercer and was an "amazon first reads" given away for free. I won’t be eager to read more books by this author and now am wary of Amazon imprints as well. Two stars because it had enough 'oomph' to keep me reading to the end.

very intense, very gripping, very good. this whole book was a trip from start to finish, an incredible piece of work. i realized while writing this review that it’s going to be a series, so i’m so excited to read more from this fantastic author, and see the characters again in a new setting. i can’t wait for the next book.

I liked it, but I almost loved it. What held me back was a lack of emotional depth; it never fully connected with me, and though the characters had interesting backstories, it always felt like the story was just skimming the surface of them. I also don't care for villain perspectives in general, but they also felt emotionally shallow. I will probably read the next one, because I like Nina and do think there's potential for very rich character development.

I really enjoyed the protagonist and look forward to reading the rest of the series. Maldonado, is a new author to me. I selected the book as my voice for Hispanic Heritage Month challenge on Kindle. Little things spoke to me with Latino sayings and phrases. I felt more kindred to the character than to, let’s say, Poirot.
