Seeking salvation after this gorgeously heavy collection of poems filled with self-discovery and internal growth. I’m worshiping Akwaeke Emezi after this read, and yearning for the warmth of Spring and the subtle joys it unleashes.

Notating poetry collections for me usually involves me starring the poems that affect me the most emotionally and sonically. I honestly almost starred every poem, and their last lines of each poem were stunning.

Here’s to finding deeper meaning inside rather than around.

"you are the hardest love
to survive you, i press my skin away
flatten my want and break the necks
of my dreams, making them dead diamonds
i remind myself that i am worth
the glittering corpses of glory"

This is from the poem 'Folding for a cruel man'

There are 3 words I came across over and over and over again reading this book; they are god, gold and blood. The author did such a great job condensing their life in this book. Told from the perspective of a young deity, staring with blood - blood represents in this book at least, sexual assault, death, the drowning of self, drowning of the essence of a person's soul, loss of and search for identity, it is very rate and very vivid.

The next is gold - its more mischievousness, trickery, the ability to isolate and understand and distinguish yourself from others to go after what you want, to do what you want regardless of how you're seen, viewed or perceived, as long as you stand shining at the end.

So with the god parts, we see religion and godliness and in a sense, reverence done in such an experimental way; from Mary, the mother of Jesus being this young deity mother's friend, to the advice, to search for meaning and relationship.

I really enjoyed it and highly recommend.

Thanks to Bloomsbury publishing for sending this book my way.

I don't really have words for this. Reverence and blasphemy, heresy and holiness, rage and joy. Queer. Transcendent. I felt seen.
