This book provides an in depth look at how racism has moved from explicit outward racism to color-blind smiling racism, and how harmful color-blind racism is to the black community.

A lot of this was a fascinating analysis of the scripts used to avoid the negative label “racist” while still upholding racist beliefs. It felt repetitive at times and even like an indulgent journal article but it was still sobering how many of the scripts I have heard considering the research is now decades old. I appreciated the more current updates but also ultimately felt that despite his rhetorical goals the book felt more reflective than actionable.
I mean it has a lot of testimonials on how people look at race but just says this is bad and this is what we should do and never explains the why behind any of those ideas weather they are good or bad. Spends a lot of time complaining how things are, demanding how they should be but not explain how to do that in the world we live in, why we should do that or anything constructive
Interesting read about Jim Crow racism vs. color-blind racism.

There is a lot of data in this, and it is kind of hard to process in audio form. I have the feeling this is used as a text book in a lot of sociology classes. The information is well worth knowing, but I would recommend reading and being able to take notes over listening in your car during your commute.

Another class assignment. Dense and academic. Definitely will challenge your perspective as a White person, though.
