Of course, for all who know me, you have to understand this book holds a special place for me that surpasses what it could ever be as a book alone because it will always conjure memories of our special wedding day! This review attempts to ignore that fact:
This is a simply told story of the importance of continuing. It speaks to the joy that comes with looking forward. The trials of the heart are timeless, though the setting is dated in its characterizations. However, none of the unenlightened stereotyping need take away from the beautiful lessons of heartache and sorrow. In fact this story could even provide a link to less privileged societies that we tend not to understand. I think if I read this at a younger age I would rate it higher. (Spoiler alert) As it is, the last heartbreaking chapter nearly claimed that last star. The philosophical approach of wise Mike reaches a level that was hidden below the surface through the earlier pages of the story. In the end, what keeps this story just a notch below favorite status is a lack of growth in Mike. I got the sense his story would change only in detail if he chose another woman. Not enough attention is given to what he saw in Kathy and what she gives to him. That said, very, very good! And a perfect book to read with my Mrs. Mike!

First published in 1947. Kathy moves from her hometown of Boston to Edmonton, Canada just after the turn of the 20th century.
The book is dear to my heart because of the title and the symbolism. It is a story of the beginnings of marriage. That paired with the brutality of the wild North Western Canada. An encouraging read for a newly married couple. It also makes me realize how "spoiled" we are in this age and we have no idea what true struggle is, met with repeated and repeated, struggle. A bittersweet book about love and all that life can bring. Those people were made of tough stuff.
I especially was thankful it wasn't a sugar-coated love story. Just a strong one.

What an enjoyable book! I picked this up and then it started to snow outside. I took that as God's message that I should park it and just read through the snowstorm. Perfect!
Delightful book about love and commitment. Young woman follows love out to the middle of nowhere in Canada. Great stories, adventure, hardship, culture. It is the quintessential snowy day read.

The title makes this book sound so cheesy...but it's not. I first read it years and years ago when Aunt Mina gave me a copy she bought at a garage sale. It's fascinating, although admittedly a little dated--it takes place in 1907 and the edition I read was published in 1947. So, for example, the main characters have decidedly unenlightened views regarding Native Americans. But don't let that stop you from giving this book a try--it's an interesting look at what it was like to live in the Canadian Northwest in the early 20th century.
Sweet story of a young wife adjusting to life in the Canadian wilderness. The writing reminded me a little bit of L.M. Montgomery's stories, while the story itself reminded me of Tisha. This book also helped me get a more rounded (and probably more accurate) opinion of a Canadian Mountie than Dudley Do-Right.... though I couldn't help picturing Dudley Do-Right every time the protagonist mentioned her Mountie husband, haha. Definitely would read again.
An enchanting tale about love and life in the Nortwestern Territory in Canada in the beginning of 20th century. The story reminded me of what I would read as a child with an innocently romantic description of the relationship between the main charachters and an adventurous account of their life. Although, i really felt the heroine's anger at not being able to save her children because she was not in a city and felt that I would have moved from there just on account of that.
Great story about family and friends... I just couldn't take all the sad parts, and I felt that Kathy left her real family behind and forgot about them.
This book was okay. It wasn't my favorite. It started out kind of interesting and then I realized that while it told the stories of these people's lives, it was done kind of as a series of vignettes rather than day to day life. It reminded me a little of [b:Anne of Green Gables|8127|Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)|L.M. Montgomery|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1390789015s/8127.jpg|3464264] only, you know, with adults. It wasn't a bad book necessarily, it just wasn't my favorite. Although it ended up with three stars because the ending did give me the feels.
Oh and I thought the descriptions of life in the north were pretty cool.

A bit more of an adult like Little House on the Praire only in Canada! I enjoyed the book and will read the sequel written many, many years later!!
