I loved this so much. Daphne du Maurier is so fantastically talented at writing, and whilst this was a completely different vibe to Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel it was still impeccable. So fun, the romance between Dona and the Frenchman was oozing with chemistry and I loved the pirate adventures. It veers into the absurd with some of the shenanigans but that just made me love it even more. And the themes were just sweet - Dona escaping the confines of life through being freed by a hot French pirate - good for her tbh. If Our Flag Means Death didn’t take inspiration from this it should have done.

This book. Where has it been hiding from me?
I've been recommended "Rebecca" by du Maurier multiple times. And, it has been the inspiration (or at least referred to) in uncounted other books and movies.
But, not once has a whisper of "Frenchman's Creek" reached my ears.

I was pulling up "Rebecca" on the library's Libby app to potentially read during October 2023 for some holiday apropos tense literary good-times. This is when I spied "Frenchman". And, on a whim, read the description.

Pirates -- What?
Mother and wife struggling with her role in society and life -- What?
Romance and adventure -- yes, please.

Dona is searching for peace from her disquietude and restlessness. And, unexpectedly finds passion combined with panache. Danger and glory. The value of being seen and understood. The difference between sacrifice-by-demand versus sacrifice-by choice. The questions of a worthwhile life coupled with expectations of role and responsibility.

Perhaps, someone who knew me well would question certain events and why (in this specific case) they did not bother me. And, yes, the approach of adultery is usually a doghouse topic for me. But, somehow, Daphne du Maurier's tackling of this subject in conjunction with all of the other pressing themes, created a poignant novel.

"Frenchman's Creek"'s protagonist is highly-relatable or at least presented in a way that is understandable. The supporting cast of pirates are exactly what I want in a seafaring crew. The societal powerful-men are just as sneering as possible to fill you with disdain. I want to fish in the creek of Navron in Cornwall.

Excellent novel. What a deep-dive hidden gem.

This is a beautiful story! It’s filled with flawed characters, who know they’re flawed and constantly fighting against their own opposing natures. The way Du Maurier writes is almost dream like, I can’t wait to read more by this author!
