Loved this book right until the little bit, and then hated it! The „twist“ was so infuriating! Good righting and good plot, got me hooked right From the start, but the twist just felt cheap and not well thought out.

I am thoroughly shocked not only of this story but the fact that this was a debut novel! This is TDJ’s second novel I read and I can definitely say she hits on a lot of heavy and real topics that are not by any means easy to read so I would check the trigger warnings! 

This story follows a young girl who allegedly murders an infant when she herself was a child, she is now living in a group home and it’s not the healthiest of places. And when she finds out she is pregnant and her baby could get taken away, she decides it’s time for everyone to know the truth about what happened to the infant 10+ years ago😱 

This story was a wild ride from the girls living in the house, to the living situation and all the toxicity, to lord her mother 🤦🏾‍♀️ and the outside characters and just their responses to things. It really makes me think like we as a society have these systems set up to help the children but are they really helping? And this isn’t for every group home or foster home but this story really sheds light on the issues around this topic, from domestic abuse and child abuse, to questioning/charging minors without a parent present (shame on her mother but again mental health issues there), to the counselors and professionals not doing right by the children in these situations. There is really just so much to unpack here.

All I can really say is my heart was physically hurting so many times, there’s a shock around every corner and you just really take into consideration mental health and the foster care system.

This is probably my favorite Tiffany D. Jackson so far and it makes me really excited for The Weight of Blood! Mary is such an interesting character to follow and her experiences with her abusive mother, the criminal justice system and foster care are important and poignantly written. I wasn't crazy about the final twist but it was decent and I didn't see it coming. The mystery was really gripping throughout, I was so interested to find out what happened. Mary's voice is just super distinct and well developed and therefore I felt really connected to her character. My ranking of Tiffany D. Jackson books as of now: Allegedly, White Smoke, Monday's Not Coming, Grown.
