Shows a lot of promise for the rest of the series but ultimately a little dull. The character development is really weak and the pacing is very inconsistent which makes this a bit of a slog. That said, the world is really interesting and the magic system is, while still being largely mysterious, very intriguing. This feels, to me, very distinctly like it was written with no real idea of what the ending is intended to be, which can sometimes spell disaster as the series goes on. I am intrigued to continue though, I’ll pick up the next one when it comes out and see where we land.

i really enjoyed yeeran’s storyline but i find lettle to be such a deeply unlikelable character that it was hard to get through. and some of the “twists” felt painfully obvious from the very beginning, so it just makes the characters look kind of stupid honestly. it’s a fun story and there are parts i really loved but jesus christ are there parts i hated
