The Fate of the Fallen is the first in a new series from Kel Kade whose “King’s Dark Tidings” tetralogy was a bestseller. It begins with the murder of the chosen one, Mathias the Lightbane, on the very day he learns who he is and that he is fated to save the world from destruction. The great sorceress who has been tutoring and protecting him all these years asks him to take Mathias head to the king to inform him of Mathias’ death.
Along the way, Aaslo has adventures and encounters that add to the urgency. He finds possible allies and friends who will become companions on his quest. He also discovers that a common reaction to learning the person fated to save the world has died is resignation. In fact, those with the most ability to fight against fate are the first to resign themselves to it.
I think The Fate of the Fallen creates an excellent world complete with a cosmology that is reminscent of the ancient gods and goddesses of Olympus, though they have many more worlds to play with. I was engrossed by the story and am eager for the next book in the series. I loved the sayings Aaslo had that came from his role as a forester. There was so much to enjoy I feel bad about my one big complaint. I felt as though Kade did not trust us to understand this book was all about fate, fatalism, and free will so he kind of hit us over the head with the theme again and again. W
hen the prophet showed up toward the end, I felt irritated. Sure, there is some humor in his uselessness as a source for advice, but really, the title has Fate in it, most people assume the world is fated to end, and Aaslo, who seldom speaks, talks about fighting against fate anytime he says more than three sentences. I got it. The author wants us to know that no matter how much fate seems stacked against us, we still must resist and use our free will to change our fate. It’s good advice and I would appreciate it more if it were given with a lighter touch.
I received an ARC of The Fate of the Fallen from the publisher through Shelf Awareness

Read for Monthly Motif 2020: Author Introduction in May
I don’t think I’ve read a book like this before. From the beginning, I expected a story where the two friends went on an adventure but failed to save the world. That’s based on the synopsis on the back of the book. The synopsis is also perfect. So what I expected did technically happen, just not in the way I expected it. And I loved that. That is all I will say about this book, and that the world building is brilliant. This is the beginning of a trilogy apparently, and I am very much looking forward to the next book.

The beginning of the book has a really unique twist that definitely surprised me.
Otherwise, this book was kinda bland. To me, the characters, settings, and plot were a little generic and lacked depth. There were some pretty cool ideas in here (grafted dragon arm, um, sign me up please) but their impact fell short because I wasn't heavily invested in the consequences for the world or wellbeing of the characters. Things didn't feel earned or authentic.
I might not be the target audience; as I was reading I remember wondering if I would've really enjoyed this book in middle or high school.
While I wasn't a fan, I think it might be a good series for a younger audience who loves the fantasy genre.

4.5!!! Really really good and entertaining. Very few parts that I didn't like. Not much to say.
I took too long to finish it because I had my mind elsewhere and I couldn't fully focus on reading. Hopefully I'll continue reading from here on.

DNF middle of second chapter. Just couldn't get into it. Don't enjoy reading about bros discussing girls for most of the first two chapters.

I was given a digital copy of this title, free, in exchange for my honest opinion.
Just so you know the summary is very very misleading, but I don’t know how to summarize it without giving away key details so….
I remember seeing someone showing this as a received ARC and thinking that it looked like my kind of book. Then I found out what it was about and it became available on Netgalley. So of course I requested it. This was nothing like I expected. In fact, when the first shocking thing happened I had to go back and re-read the synopsis. That’s when I discovered that it lied! On the one hand, this is a typical fantasy- a prophecy, a charming and handsome chosen one and the lovable sidekick- kind of flipped on its side. Because of that, I am going to try to be as vague as possible because this is a read that is best experienced for yourself. The quest to save the world doesn’t go as planned. Through the process of trying to gather forces to fight the enemy, the king has lost hope and would rather give in to the inevitable. Slowly a band of strays come together in a last ditch effort to fight the enemy. Things change when they discover that the enemy is a couple of gods, and decide to borrow power from a dangerous source.
Initially, the characters are nothing impressive, but they grown on you. I really liked them after they had been through some things and I got to know them a bit better. Despite the seriousness and danger that was around, there was still room for comaraderie and humor. (Dolt I’m looking at you.) The only downside is the way that the book ends- a cliffhanger. I am in desperate needs for the sequel. I really can’t wait to see what happens!

Imagine the author read Phule's Company 3 times in a row, then set out to write an epic fantasy.
Fate of the Fallen is a prophecy book with a difference. I don't want to say too much as I don't want to spoil anything. The book isn't what I expected in a good way. It has action, drama, humour, magic, prophecy, Gods and reapers.
I wasn't sure about Aaslo at the beginning but he quickly grew on me. I like his dedication to his friend, mixed with his Forrester knowledge. Actually, the book has a great cast of characters. They are an interesting bunch. I especially like Peck and Morty they are young and have had a hard life but it hasn't stopped them. The moment they meet Aaslo is a great character introduction.

The book is split into several different POV's. it interesting seeing what is happening from the human and God perspective. But doing it this way keeps the pace fast and interesting.
Kel Kade writing style is engaging, funny, full of wisdom and action. The writing style with its storytelling makes for it easy to read.
FYI - Once you get to a certain section of the book the cover makes so much more sense.
The Shroud of Prophecy series is one that I will be keeping an eye on.
My rating for Fate of the Fallen is 4.8 out of 5.
Thank you to @JamiedoesPR and Tor Books for supplying me with a copy of Fate of the Fallen for a fair and honest review.
