Love me some Sayers. This wasn't my favorite of hers, but was still enjoyable.

Loved the plot in this one!!! Ingenious!

I think this is my favorite Peter Wimsey novel. I like the setting and the premise. It moves at a good pace and gets creepy in the right places.

A bit tedious, with some belaboring on the time of death (although author later reveals there was A Good Reason for this) and (I felt) too drawn out solving of the cypher. I found myself skimming over many parts.

Loved the two-column list. "Weldon. Things to Do: Kick him." Could see the chemistry between PW and HV with those few side notes.

Needed an external reference to fully appreciate some of the allusions. I'm sure would have understood the story anyway without them, but they do serve to underscore Lord Peter's personality (the erudite joker), and the era of these books.

I loved the biography at the end by the Uncle. As a new reader, it gave me a helpful background on most of the characters I'd met for the first time in Strong Poison, most especially Lord Peter himself. And to find out Bunter was once his loyal Sergeant!

Excited to read the next one, Gaudy Night. I hear it's a lot of readers' favorite.

Because of the overly-detailed cipher section and the too-sudden ending (we don't see the murderer confronted with discovery) this book wasn't as much fun as Strong Poison, the first Peter Wimsey to include Harriet Vane, but I still enjoyed it!

Sayers has a tendency to have her characters (usually Lord Peter) make a point with a very large number of words. Usually, I like this, but in this novel, it feels tedious. This novel has a seemingly complex mystery with a relatively simple solution that's revealed fairly excruciatingly right before the novel abruptly ends. I wonder what was going on in Sayers's life when she wrote this one because it seems like she wasn't really focused on it.

Good cast and audio production,  but cutting it down into 4 hours severely weakened the plot.  Do yourself a favor and read the whole book!
