When I bought this I misread the Title and thought it was The Alchemist.... I soon realized that this was NOT that book
I don’t know how this series escaped me in the past! I found it while browsing Libby recommendations for a new book. It’s a plot-driven YA fantasy based on the legends surrounding Nicholas Flamel and his wife Perenelle song with Dr. John Dee, who are all historical figures. The world building includes elements of myths, legends, and history to weave an action-packed tale set in modern San Francisco. I’ll continue to read the rest of the 6-part series.

This was a big hit with my 11 year old daughter and I enjoyed it quite a bit as well. We're both waiting for the library to deliver books 2 and 3 to us.

Me ha gustado mucho este libro por dos razones:
1. El entramado histórico: adoro cuando los escritores consiguen venderte tan bien una historia que hacen que te creas que lo que te cuentan realmente ocurrió. Admiro a aquellos autores que introducen personajes y datos históricos en sus libros, compaginando la realidad y la ficción. Y este autor ha sabido entretenerme como el que más con todas sus explicaciones y referencias históricas que le dan sentido a todo en un universo paralelo. Gracias por eso.
2. Los personajes: todo buen libro tiene buenos personajes y este no es una excepción. En cierto sentido está relacionado con el punto 1, ya que lo que más me fascina es cómo recrea en mi mente la imagen que siempre he tenido de ciertos personajes históricos y me ayuda a volver a descubrirlos. Prácticamente cada personaje del libro tiene su referencia histórica o mitológica y eso es mi debilidad. Así que un 10 también en ese aspecto.
PERO (tenía que haber un pero) tengo que decir que a pesar de todo el final se me hizo un poco... ¿predecible? O quizás esperaba algo más. Tampoco es un final cerrado, la historia sigue en los próximos libros, cosa que tampoco me gusta. Hay grandes sagas en las que cada libro tiene su inicio y final propios por así decirlo. No suelen gustarme las historias que se venden en 5, 6, 7, etc., libros diferentes cuando se podría haber escrito perfectamente uno solo, pues el segundo libro comienza con la escena que aún no se había terminado en las últimas páginas del primero. Pero bueno, para gustos colores.
Pero en general este primer libro de la saga me ha encantado y me ha hecho disfrutar muchísimo, que es de lo que se trata. Totalmente recomendable y estoy segura de que voy a terminar la saga, ganas no me faltan.

i think i read this in sixth grade and didn't really like it ?
not the best one of the series but loved these books and all the historical characters in them!
This was all about the binding for me. I love the font, the softness of the pages, the kerning. It was a pleasure to read for these reasons, so hats off to the publisher of this edition.
The book itself was fun, easy to read. It's currently one of the few first books in a middle grade or YA novel that has me wanting to go on.
