If you’re looking for good literature, if you’re looking for high art, this is not it, my dude. The characters are inconsistent and there are way too many books (I read this assuming that it was limited to just the one). However, its target audience is not discerning adults such as myself, and for the people it’s intended for, it’s fun, and cute, and if you suspend disbelief it can distract you from life for a bit. So rock on, kids, hope you defeat the looming fantastical issues in your world (we know you will).
Sincerely, reader who understands this is way too similar to Percy Jackson to be chill with copyrights, but would have enjoyed it a lot in middle school

Okay, so I liked it more than I anticipated it.

Do I want to know more about the context of the story, both historically and mythologically? Yes. I'm not dying to learn more about it all, but my interests are somewhat piqued (more with Dee and Flamel than anything else).

I must say that I found myself really engaged halfway through, but some things couldn't be forgiven. For instance . . . the word "immediately" is used 31 times. Yes, I counted. Maybe it's just the length of the word that made it stick out at the beginning, but I felt it was incredibly overused.

I also felt that the resolution was way quick and somewhat unsatisfying. Josh's struggle was one of the most gripping parts of the book, and I feel like decisions were just made so abruptly/simply in the final moments.

I'm very interested to see how my students respond to this text and I feel challenged to set them up for enjoying it as much as they can.

actual rating 2.5
about this book,I'm not completely sure but i think one of the reasons i couldn't bring myself to give it any more stars is that I'm just too old for this.(it would have been a complete 5 stars only 4 years ago). the story was great and it was a really easy read but it took me a LONG while to read it because the book seemed to keep giving new information and explanations about myths and gods and magical powers , so there were only a few pages ( maybe about 150 pages?)left for the actual plot.
still,I'll definitely give the second book a go.

DID NOT FINISH: 40%

Felt a little slow to me as far as the time period it was supposed to be in

It was good. I can see why the kids who are reading it like it. I have no desire to read the rest in the series. It just didn't grab me.

Read this when I was 10 in Dutch. Just reread ir in English and was surprised at how much details I still remembered! Still holds up as a fun book and series setup.

This book was weirdly interesting and entertaining for me and I know I'm not supposed to like the bad guys but I kind of like the Morrigan and I don't know why. I guess I'll eventually have to buy the next one so I can see what happens next.
