Check the content warnings before reading!! Hard to read at some points, but I loved the ending and the main characters progression was so meaningful because of all the hard parts. Super cool universe she’s made and the aliens in it are super interesting and well done. Overall great world building + great characters

This is my first Nalo Hopskinson book and certainly won't be the last. This was a compelling narrative based around our main character, Tan Tan, who is the daughter of a political official, named Anthony. They go from living good in the Caribbean planet of Toussaint, to being thrust into the wild and brutal world called New Half Way Tree.

In this new setting, Tan-Tan has to navigate different species and people, along with dealing with her own traumatic experiences after being abused by her father twice.

I loved this book! I read it for my Afrofuturism class and ended up presenting on it so my copy is filled with annotations. The world building was so well done. I love the way Nalo Hopkinson leans into the oral storytelling tradition to create this evolving tale. There are several traumatic experiences that the MC faces but I think Hopkinson does a great job of showing that cycle of abuse and how it can be disrupted. This is an undeniably Caribbean novel and I lived every bit of it.

A sci-fi / fully-automated world with a Caribbean cultural/linguistic setting, dealing with issues of criminal justice and privacy in such a world. Hopkinson's prose is truly beautiful
