I read this book in preparation for watching Beau Travail
In my opinion, "Billy Budd" exemplifies both the best and the worst traits of Melville's prose: it is full of nautical jargon and meanders in lots of places but it also speaks of such powerful emotions and does it so compellingly that I audibly gasped while reading certain passages. The character of John Claggart is so nuanced that I cannot stop thinking about him and what makes him tick. That's some truly stellar work.
I am excited to read Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's interpretation of this work!

Unfortunately boredom struck me faster than Billy's unexpected hit on Claggart.
I listened to this one to finish year-end goals. When I listen to historical books, I appreciate the imagery of a bygone time.

What a wonderful story. I loved it. It was hard work at times but so worth it. I loved the writing, how the story developed, Billy Budd and Starry Vere.
