I probably love this one out of sentiment, because it was the first full-length Agatha Christie book that I read and understood. This book is a good character study, with all of them layered. The solution of the mystery is pretty thin, and I’m not sure that it would work in real life, but still, it’s entertaining.
Agatha Stats:
Detective- Colonel Race
Published- 1944
POV- 3rd person
Means- Poison
First Victim- Rosemary (née Marle) Barton
Movie starring Deborah Raffin

Rating: 4.5 stars

Even though I say often that Poirot mysteries are my favourite of Agatha Christie's, two of my top four Christie novels are stand alones and have no Poirot in them at all! Because this one is now joining the previously established top three. Sparkling Cyanide was about a three-ish stars until the method of the poisoning was explained and it jumped way up. It was just so clever, yet so simple, and it is one of the best executed murders in terms of realism I have read to date.

I honestly forgot what it was like to enjoy one of her mysteries and I can't believe it came from a Colonel Race book lol. Don't know what it was exactly but this mystery reminded me of her more older, more classic mysteries which are more famous than her later ones which are not really well read for a reason

This was the April pick for Read Christie 2023.

Lovely, flirty Rosemary died suddenly at her birthday dinner party and it was ruled a suicide.

A year later, the chapters introduce each of the guests at the party with their own POV, and they all seem more guilty than the last. Until the suspicious, bumbling husband decides to lay a trap and recreates the birthday dinner on the anniversary of Rosemary’s death. What could possibly go wrong?

Colonel Race is a retired M15 agent, a steady, voice of reason type character who seems to know everyone, and who ends up assisting police in solving the crime.

Great characters and a tight mystery make this a solid Christie novel.
