I understand that this book was written in a time where husband and wife roles were completely different to how they are today, but I found myself getting uncomfortable with the ending. I don’t see how it was funny at all, it just seemed sad. Katherina was a strong feisty woman-maybe at times rude but, she changed into a submissive quiet wife.

I really like these Shakespeare Stories books, they are really interesting and for someone who can't actually read the plays (yes I have tried!) these are a god send! I loved them, and it explains the story really well, the illustration are really fun too, and I think kids would love these as well (or at least, get the stories a lot better than by reading the books or watching the plays haha).

I knew nothing of this play before my granddaughter brought it to me to read with her. I must say, that I found reading it to her very difficult as the plot unfolds. Petrucchio tames this woman and the techniques he uses to do this are familiar in modern times- gaslighting, isolating her from her family etc. As I didn't know the original, I researched productions of the play and this book seems an accurate (though bowdlerised version of the play.

The reading led to an interesting discussion about what the title of the play means.

I think this series is a brilliant way for children and adults to introduce themselves to Shakespeare. My grandchildren are fascinated by the books and get them out every time they come to the house.

Not my favourite Shakespeare play but as usual a classic and nice to have both Wordsworth edition and the orchard Shakespeare story edition
