A mixed bag for me. Very eloquent in explaining the science behind the disease and relaying the stories of his patients. Less successful when it dwelled on larger issues that peripherally affected the topic, like the long diversions on tobacco companies and early AIDS activism. While important, those issues have been covered better elsewhere and here just served as a distraction. Additionally, I became more and more annoyed by the surfeit of epigraphs at the beginning of every chapter. Truly, a boggling choice.

Still, I quite enjoyed a lot of what I read, especially the various stories of success and (mostly) failure in how different researchers approached cancer treatment over the centuries.

Much more than I'd ever like to know about cancer, but a riveting and intense account of this complex illness.

authoritative, wide-ranging and extremely readable, poignant, fascinating - an excellent exploration not only of cancer itself, but the many lives spent seeking understanding and ways to cure.

Amazing book that charts the course of cancer medicine through a four thousand year period. Incredibly through, detailed and interspersed with real stories of survivors and those that perished.
