Wow, this book was fabulous. I would say a large part went over my head, but I never wanted to stop reading.

I think that as readers, we see the flashbacks and references to other works and Van Go’s frame story as part of the narrative, but I think it’s actually a sign of Monk’s deteriorating memory, his descent toward dementia - the erasure of his reality.

Listened to over 40%, with no end to the book within a book in sight (because you can't see where it ends on an audiobook, and it was torture). Could not stand it any more. Neither funny nor satirical, just a blathering idiot who was also portrayed as a serial r@pist as if that could ever be humorous. After today's Pulitzer prize announcement for fiction going to a book that has so much r@pe in it, I realized I needed to dnf this book because there is no reason to be exposed to any more of that. I might have enjoyed reading just the part about his family, but the book part doesn't work at all. I hope the worst idiocies were edited out of the movie adaptation, and that James will be better.
