Monday or Tuesday by Virginia Woolf

A very short collection of stories (barely 70 pages) that seem the testing ground for the style Woolf would implement in novels going forward (the only real exception being the straightforward but delightfully satirical “A Society”). Pieces like “Blue and Green” are barely a page long and could be argued as the origins of prose poetry. But that poetic prose can be found everywhere in this collection, from the sensations felt from an orchestra (“A String Quartet”) to observations and connections made from the smallest stimuli (“The Mark on the Wall”), to crossing nature and man in the “Kew Gardens”, probably the best and most complete story of the group.

Favourite(s): “An Unwritten Novel”, “A String Quartet”, “Kew Gardens”, “The Mark on the Wall”
Least Favourite: “Monday or Tuesday”

This was my first exposure to Virginia Woolf and I think I'm going to have to put her up there with martinis and caviar -- things you're supposed to appreciate in order to seem sophisticated, but really you'd rather have beer and tuna salad.

More of a 2.5 for me. Some of the ideas introduced were fun to entertain, but most of the short stories were misses. Just too many huge paragraphs vaguely linked together by some ideas. It was really good when it was engaging, though, which seemed to mainly be in A Society short story.

I have, admittedly, still a little bit of an undeniable adoration of Woolf's stream of consciousness (which was gained in an Upper Grad course focused solely on her and her major works). I loved the second story in this collection best.

And I can't wait to work into a few of my next collections I picked up of

Loved "A society" and "An unwritten Novel" but the rest dragged on a little and were a little confusing. I'd need to re read it to properly take it in.
