As someone who works in a veterinary hospital, I found this book in some ways very relatable as in the craziest cases are often true! It is a very enjoyable listen if you like biology and are appropriately thick skinned when it comes to guts, gore, and hospitals. It’s very funny, yet movingly and conveys well the strain the NHS is under. Recommend the TV series too, if you enjoy the book!

a realistic insight into the lives of our front-line staff of the NHS. A wonderful way to tell Adam Kay’s story and so informative whilst being lighthearted and funny too. I couldn’t put the book down and felt so connected to his tale. It made me realise the things I take for granted.

So funny and devastating simultaneously. He has such brilliant analogies and anecdotes throughout balanced with informative and shocking stories of the NHS and the reality of being a doctor.

Absolutely brilliant and insightful. Inherently hilarious and unflinchingly honest, I loved this look into the NHS. Kay manages to tell his stories with genuine compassion and hilarity, often going from dry wit to heartbreaking loss in a matter of pages. He does not shy away from any issues and understands that the profession is impossible and flawed but that the NHS MUST be protected. The rise in suicides of doctors alongside many leaving the profession or suffering mental and physical consequences as a result is explored and highlights just how stupid it is when politicians decide once again to attack those who keep our nation alive. This is Going to Hurt feels even more prevalent as we begin to reflect on the pandemic, which highlighted to many that the NHS was on its knees, and that clapping for them does bugger all in comparison to actionable change like pay rises and reform. I would absolutely recommend the audio book edition of this as hearing Kay recall his own stories is amazing and you can tell the passion and love that’s gone into it.
