Rumors and gossip lead to death, so aptly portrayed in this book. The title is ironic, as there is very little happiness in anyone's home. I think this would be really interesting if it were made into a film with a modern setting. The book has a good plot but the story plods along.

Depressing story of the epic battle of Woman v. Society, along the lines of Vanity Fair, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Moll Flanders, Madam Bovary. For some reason, though, I liked this tale a bit better then those listed--so much of the conflict here is about the agony of terrible timing. Also liked the vivid portrait of upper crust Northeast U.S. at turn of the century, which includes funny slams on NYC as a dusty, stifling, "shadeless" city.

3.5ish
Did not have the dazzle that Age of Innocence did for me, but her writing is just so special and beautiful that sometimes I just have to smile and chuckle to myself at the brilliance of a line.

She leaves you once again on the edge of your seat until the tragic end. I felt the suffocation Lily felt the entire way through, and men around every corner trying to take from her. Exhausting.

Beautifully written but omg it's long.
