The House of Mirth

Edith Wharton

“To a less illuminated intelligence Mrs. Bart’s counsels might have been dangerous; but Lily understood that beauty is only the raw material of conquest, and that to convert it into success other arts are required. She knew that to betray any sense of superiority was a subtler form of the stupidity her mother denounced, and it did not take her long to learn that a beauty needs more tact than the possessor of an average set of features.”

Lily is defined by her beauty and womanhood, only as useful as society will let her be; manacled to the needs of society women and the search for a rich husband but you get the sense that deep down she wants to be more and have more.

This book was too tragic for me to really love it, and I think it would have been better to have a split or multi narrative covering other perspectives to give it more depth, such as Gertie or Rosedale.

Heavy book I couldn’t get through it easily

I really loved this - it was engaging and beautifully written, and the main character is fascinating. I absolutely recommend this - I think it'll stay with me for a long time.

excellent book, albeit depressing. how dare edith to make me cry like that. this book is truly tragic and exquisitely written, this novel illuminates the hypocrisies of the upper class through the lens of fatal pride. i honestly didn’t fully get into this book until the second act, but what an unforgettable act it turned out to be. a very sad but cautionary tale. i think it would have been better to have a split or multi narrative covering other perspectives to give it more depth, such as gertie or rosedale.
