Well I’ve now read all three of Edith Wharton’s books I’ve heard of (Ethan Frome, Age of Innocence, and this one). I have the same complaints I had about the other two. Writing was a bit, self-conscious? Too many fancy metaphors. Pretty good story, it wasn’t a huge drag to get through, and I sympathized with the main character who wasn’t objectively very likeable and I appreciate when an author manages to do that. But as with her other books, the love story was hastily scrapped together with literally just a few conversations, and it ended sadly, which should probably make me think more of the book, but I like books with happy endings!
This is such a perfect tragedy to me. The development of Lily's character, the complete surrender to fate, and the authentic look into a woman's mind during this period were wonderful to experience.
By the end of the book, I knew Lily. I was completely immersed in her mind and decision-making. I love Wharton's writing with all my heart, but there were a few instances in this novel where I struggled to follow the writing.

This was the first book I read in Peace Corps. I read it based on the suggestion of a biologist friend who only reads classics. Because I don't really enjoy the classics, she wanted to give me something to read that she thought I'd adore.
I wouldn't say I adored it, but I could definitely see why my friend had enjoyed it. I never felt truly drawn into the story and found it plenty easy to put the book down. But as a first step in entering the world of the classics, this was a good one to read.

Tough read; especially in February :)
A critique of the times and an ending that doesn't pull punches. This would have been a much stronger book at half the length.
