A fun military action adventure that is limited by its bland characters

This book was essentially Tom Clancy thinking of the most effective way to kill the most people and then devising a team to stop that. He did a good job and it's a lively adventure.

Growing up with action (specifically HK gangster) movies, there's a part of me that really loves action/adventure whether it's in movies or video games.

This novel totally reads like a video game. the one major downside is the crazy/evil environmentalists in the book. But other than that I really like the strategy of executing each mission and the characters (although I think the main reason I like Clark is because of the way Willem DaFoe played him in Clear and Present Danger, same goes with liking the Jack Ryan books because of Harrison Ford- Ben Afflek and Alec Baldwin just didn't do it for me)

This was a decent book. Felt like a bunch of short stories at the beginning and then when the larger story takes shape. It was missing Jack Ryan, which was unexpected. The overall flow worked well and had the breakneck pace Clancy provides. It also had a bunch of boring techno mumble jumble and bitching about paperwork and bureaucracy.

Many years ago, I played a video game about an international counterterrorist team called Rainbow Six. I knew then it shared a rough storyline with a book written by Tom Clancy, but for over 20 years, I'd never actually read the book. Until now.

Tom Clancy knows how to write an interesting story, though he's...a little bit wordy. Worse, he tends to be repetitive. This book could probably have been cut by at least 1/3 of the length and still had almost the exact same plotline. I tend to like a lot of detail but even I thought this was a little much. In particular, one entire plotline involving detectives basically goes nowhere and in the end adds next to nothing to the overall plot, which might be okay if it was a few pages. But it stretches on for parts of several chapters. Clancy does incredible research into his books, and most of the action feels authentic.

Besides the counterterrorist squad Rainbow, the plot focuses on a radical environmentalist scheme. The plot is perhaps more than a bit farfetched, though written in just a way it ALMOST feels plausible. The villains are definitely a little bit of a strawman. The villains do feel oddly more relevant now than they probably did in 1998, and any story with a potential pandemic obviously feels a little more uncomfortable now.

If you can handle the wordiness of Clancy's writing and the overall length of the book (it's not one you're going to be finishing in one sitting), Rainbow Six is an entertaining political thriller.
