I grabbed this book on a whim from the New Graphic Novels shelf at my library, and I'm glad I followed the impulse. It's beautiful and thought-provoking, and I got exposure to figures I'd never heard of before. I really appreciated the range of people the author highlights, from art to activitism to athletes. The art feels pop-art-ish to my amateur eyes, and it's very appealing. It's a quick read, easy to flip through, and will almost certainly prompt additional reading and research. I like it as a conversation starter, especially for teen readers.

So many of the struggles the people in its pages fought for are still being fought in 2017.

Beautiful art. A great book to grab interest and encourage further learning about these significant people. This would be a great addition to a high school classroom library!

This collection if illustrations, quotations, and brief bios of important black figures in history and the current culture and media works well as a snapshot of the past and present. Recommended for anyone who feels even a little uncertain about where to start with black history.

History and art are the perfect companions, as demonstrated by this collection of illustrations. Wimberly began this with just 8 illustrations for a publication during Black History Month in 2015, and continued the series over the next few years. He's created this compilation in this lovely printed and bound book, and the effect is stunning. An inspiring book with a diverse cast of characters, ranging from Ice Cube to Zadie Smith, Dave Chappelle to Laverne Cox. This is the kind of book I would hope to find on people's coffee tables and be excited to pick up and fall into while hanging around in their living rooms. A must have, for sure.

I found this collection to be very inspirational. Reading quotes from these amazing leaders made me want to be a better person. Wimberly's artwork is stunning and I really loved getting to see how well they paired with the words from some of history's greats.
