A very promising premise and first couple chapters that I feel turned into nothing. at first is was mysterious and fun and I loved the cast of characters but I feel like the action past the first quarter of the book was stagnant and weird romances sprang up between people I didnt see having romances at all,,,,,,,, I wish I liked it more :/

I was excited to read this after watching the miniseries adaptation of her novel the Essex Serpent, which had great storytelling in it. This was so bland and disappointing. The characters never really grew they all seemed stagnant, even the main character. No big reveal at the end, no dramatic climax. The most interesting things that happened occurred to the supporting characters in the story and even those things were only mildly intriguing or were resolved long. This took me awhile to finish and I forced my way through it to see if anything else would happen - I kept hoping.

I like the premise but just don't care enough about what happens or the characters to continue. The writing is so pared back it's often a bit dull. Curious to know how it ends, but not enough to read another 200 pages.

I have tried to read this book three or four times but I found it hard work- it was boring! I hate saying that, but it was. I skimmed through but nothing held my interested when I did that.
I rarely give up on a book so quickly but I have hundreds of books to read and don't want to waste time on one that I resent picking up.

more like 3.5 for me.
this was sure atmospheric. from the first chapters where mystery overwhelms to the end of the book, there is a very strong feeling of a dream/nightmare you don't wake up even if you could. the characters are also very dreamlike, very unique and gauzy as they continue as if nothing is out of the ordinary. with the very aptly interwoven themes of morality, faith, truth, I don't think this book was in any way pointless nor was it necessarily eventless.
i just found the middle part a bit difficult to keep my attention going because the first and the last chapters have a more strong element of suspense and wait.
