the structure of this book sucks so bad... the worldbuilding is cool and impressive in its scope and the 2 main plots are pretty fascinating, but the super extensive tangential character backstories interwoven in between the two are boring in comparison, which was made even more frustrating by the fact that most of said characters aren't that interesting in the first place. i enjoyed maybe the first and last 50 pages and not much in between. it's like. the author introduces a kickass mystery alien spaceship and then immediately dives into an extensive story abt how a guy's wife almost died a century ago for a good 100 pages and i'm there going SIR 😠THE SPACESHIP???? CAN WE GET BACK TO THE SPACESHIP? and then the characters don't actually reach the spaceship until the last 10% of the book. disappointing
