‘Nightingale House’ by Steve French is a classic story about a haunting. The vibe of this entire book is creepy and unnerving. It contains all the traditional elements of a haunting: a super old house, a little girl with an imaginary friend and a lot of tragic. Because of this, the story is quite predictable. However, that doesn’t make it less scary! French’s writing style is quite pleasant even though the shivers will run down your spine. You can’t help yourself but continue reading/listening. The story take place partially in the present and partially in the past and makes you feel both sad and scared at the same time, all of the time. It is a mystery what is happening and the house and what causes it. Since we are reading about the past, the answer must be searched there, but nothing specific stands out immediately. The story builds up the tention slowly and it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This started out okay, but then slipped into becoming utterly formulaic. Very early on, I knew exactly how it was going to end. Even the plot twists that I didn’t foresee were completely unsurprising. The scariest thing about this book, was Mildred’s “charming” boundary stomping. Never mind ghosts, I would have moved just to get away from her…

WOW!! The ending to this book was sooo good, I never wanted it to end! I love books that involve ghosts so I’m super glad that I was able to get my hands on this one. I loved the father/daughter relationship between Daniel and Caitlyn so much & even felt a little jealous at times. This book was way spooky, to the point where I couldn’t even read it at night sometimes

Another read I was drawn to because of the cover. The mesmerisingly eerie haunted house drew me in immediately and I just knew I had to read this one.

Daniel and his wife Nicole fell in love with The Nightingale House in Maine as soon as they set eyes on it and just knew it would make the perfect family home to raise their daughter Caitlyn. Unfortunately before they had the chance to realise their dream Nicole was killed in an horrific car accident, leaving Daniel and Caitlyn to make the move on their own.

Right from the start things don’t feel right. Full of unexplainable noises and “things that go bump in the night”, plus trying to deal with his daughter’s unhealthy infatuation with her new imaginary friend, Daniel starts to feel more and more like he is losing his grip on reality. He becomes desperate to learn what secrets the house is hiding, no matter what it may cost him.

More than just a spooky ghost story, this has a real undertone of grief and loss throughout as we feel Daniel deal with the unimaginable pain of losing his wife and the struggle to now bring up his daughter on his own.

The story is set in the present day through the eyes of Daniel plus journal entries written by a young woman in the early 1900’s. I loved the way the history of the house was interwoven into the story through these journal entries, it added a layer of intrigue for me as I felt everything starting to come together.

This was an enjoyable and quick read where the pages turned easily and although eerie and creepy, it was still quite light and I was definitely able to read this one at night before turning off the lights.

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ Digtital for the opportunity to read this.

The Nightingale House is a new beginning for widower Daniel Price and his young daughter Caitlyn. After months of grief, this will be the place where they start their life as a family of two!
Whispers and strange things start happening in the house and his nightmares are very vivid.
Daniel has this feeling that someone is inside with him and his daughter.
Plus Caitlyn is talking to her imaginary friend!
Daniel starts to worry she's making things up in her head to deal with her mothers death!
Soon Daniel starts to uncover the chilling story of the family who lived in the house years before.
Betrayal, tragedy and murder.
Could the Nightingale House not be the home Daniel dreamed of for his daughter-but a place that will bring their worst nightmares to life?

It doesn't have to be October for you to enjoy a well-written haunted house story. If you are looking for a ghost story that feels authentic, this is the one for you. The setting, characters and pacing all make this a book you won't want to put down.
