I wanted The Guest to be so much more than it is.

Emma Cline’s writing is wonderful — quick, sultry, and so so atmospheric. I felt like I was summering on the East Coast by page two. What gets me about this book is that nothing happens, nothing. The last page, the last word, is the start of the thing you’ve been waiting for this whole time! I can appreciate a good, unsatisfying ending but this just felt confusing. I read almost 300 pages to not find out what happens?
Does Dom the drug dealer come and find her and hurt Simon?
or
does Simon see her and take her back?
or
is she just making all of this up?
or
is Jack alive or hurting himself?
I guess I just don’t understand the point here. Where is the story? Is the story just about a girl who wanders the beaches of New Jersey for a week? I’m so lost.

A delectable train wreck that I could not put down. Gobsmacked at the sheer audacity of protagonist Alex and the way she both floats and jackhammers through life.

this is a fucking weird book. this truly the top tier of unreliable narrators. this was very hard to get into as I didn’t understand the meandering plot. however as the book continues something extremely sinister seems to be ever boiling under the surface and it is very unsettling. and then i couldn’t stop reading. good for fans of the divisive film Saltburn and My Year of Rest and Relaxation for sure.
i could see this being a good episodic series- each group she leaves in the wake a different episode kind of like Swarm
