Continuing the story of the money-hungry Kira who’s pretty much been captured now. Seeing L and Light work together on something has been interesting. They have a strange faux-friendship, even when Light doesn’t remember the whole of their rivalry.

Misa’s character improved quite a lot in this book. She’s still a bit dependent on the other characters, particularly Rem, but she also acts entirely of her own volition. She has much more agency, and they are able to get a confirmation of the Kira’s identity because of her.

Misa’s relationship with Rem is kind of weird. I had assumed that Rem had one-sided feelings for Misa. Rem even explicitly uses the phrase ‘feelings for you’ but in this book Rem says that these feelings are not romantic. Honestly I find this hard to believe based on the previous characterization, it feels like the author changed their mind. Rem also mentions that they are a girl, which I also think should have been mentioned earlier and is again something that makes me think that this was a last-minute change. Maybe they thought even a one-sided romance between a Shinigami and a woman was too weird?

Misa and Light’s relationship was more fleshed out in this book. Light seems like he actually cares about Misa’s well-being. I’m curious to see whether this will change once he gets his memory back. This is an interesting layer to their relationship, because if Light never gains his memory back I think he and Misa could probably be happy together. However, in the previous books, Light planned on killing Misa after he used her, showing that Light as Kira does not care deeply for her. Maybe this would change? I’m really curious how it will turn out.

One small detail that is super cool to me is how differently Light is drawn during his amnesia. He has a hopefulness and a shine of light in his eyes that the death-note possessing Light doesn’t have. Even the way the character is drawn seems innocent, which is skillfully done by the comic artist. From a writing perspective, I think it’s clever that Light personally acknowledges the similarities between him and the first Kira. He sees his ideology in Kira, and knows that some of the facts line up, but refuses to seriously consider what he knows in his gut is likely true. A complicated thought process to pull off, but it works well here. Normally I’m not a fan of amnesia plots, but now that I know Light will get his memory back at some point I think I appreciate it more lol.

I love that the last page is a ‘how to use it’ factoid about shinigami being unable to have sex. It’s just so random especially following up the last scene.

The misogyny is the main reason this isn’t getting 4 stars. It’s so bad. Misa’s entire purpose really is just to be a tool for light. And why does she talk in third person? Are they just trying to make her sound more cute and dumb? Even even Rem ends up becoming a tool for Light pretty much.. the only kind of ok female character is Wedy except she’s hardly in it and still has to wear a skin tight latex jumpsuit -_- and Naomi Misora from vol 2 of course but she was killed off so fast.
