dark mysterious medium-paced
I don’t think I’ve read anything quite like it. Rulfo managed to create such a surreal space between the land of the living and the dead. The spirits which permeate people and spaces is executed so seamlessly that it’s easy to lose touch with who is in the physical reality and who has already passed over…regardless of that, Rulfo very expertly plants you in the present moment. Otherwise we are taken along a series of storyteller’s recollections focusing around the Don Pedro and the nature which crumbles and is pounded by the relentless rain. Rulfo gives such character to his landscapes and the natural elements which influence them…personifying them to the point that the elements become accessory characters themselves. Overall thoroughly engaging read but a bit convoluted at times.

Too surreal, episodic and puzzling for me. Though I did get a faint sense of place. I felt like I was missing something the whole time… not really a fan when it feels deliberately difficult.
